Where it came from
Mahou Shoujo Lalabel, produced by Studio Pierrot and aired in 1980, represents a significant milestone as the studio's first original magical girl television series. Directed by Hiroshi Shidara and based on the manga by Eiko Fujiwara, the show emerged during a period when the genre was evolving away from pure fantasy toward more grounded, character-driven narratives, reflecting the socio-cultural shifts of late-1970s and early-1980s Japan.
The series centers on Lalabel, a young witch who follows an antagonist to the human world, where she learns to navigate everyday life while using her powers to assist those around her. The design aesthetic reflects the softer, rounded animation styles characteristic of the era, prioritizing an approachable, whimsical tone that resonated with young audiences and helped establish the structural tropes of the magical girl genre that Studio Pierrot would continue to refine in later works.
