Where it came from
March Comes in Like a Lion (Sangatsu no Lion) Season 2 was produced by Studio Shaft and aired in 2017, serving as a continuation of the adaptation of Chica Umino's acclaimed manga. The series chronicles the life of Rei Kiriyama, a professional shogi player struggling with profound loneliness and the complexities of his chosen path. The studio focused on maintaining the meditative, atmospheric tone of the source material while exploring the deeper emotional growth of the protagonist.
Under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo, the adaptation is noted for its distinctive visual language, which blends surreal imagery with the stark reality of the shogi world. The design philosophy aimed to externalize the internal psychological states of the characters, using color palettes and architectural framing to mirror their shifting vulnerabilities. Upon its release, the second season was widely praised by critics and audiences alike for its mature storytelling and the sensitive handling of themes such as depression and familial bonds.
