Synopsis

In the end, “Gearless” Joe was the one that reigned as the champion of Megalonia, a first ever megalobox tournament. Fans everywhere were mesmerized by the meteoric rise of Joe who sprung out from the deepest underground ring to the top in mere three months and without the use of gear. Seven years later, “Gearless” Joe was once again fighting in underground matches. Adorned with scars and once again donning his gear, but now known only as Nomad.

Provenance

Where it came from

Megalo Box 2: Nomad was produced by TMS Entertainment and released in 2021 as a direct sequel to the 2018 series, which had been created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the classic manga Ashita no Joe. While the first season focused on the high-octane mechanics of the sport, the sequel took a darker, more introspective turn, exploring themes of trauma, migration, and the search for identity through the lens of a weary, nomadic protagonist.

The series was directed by Yo Moriyama, who returned after working on the original series and its predecessor's conceptual art. Moriyama aimed to distance the second season from the traditional underdog sports narrative, instead opting for a gritty, melancholic aesthetic inspired by Westerns. Upon its release, the series received significant critical acclaim for its mature storytelling and unconventional character development, solidifying its place as a distinct entry in the modern sports anime canon.
