Where it came from
Memory was produced by Mushi Production and released in 1964 as a short experimental animation. It emerged during a fertile period for Osamu Tezuka, who sought to push the artistic boundaries of the medium beyond traditional narrative structures, exploring themes of human consciousness and the passage of time through abstract visuals.
The film is noted for its unconventional aesthetic, which relies on a minimalist and surrealist approach to storytelling rather than dialogue. Tezuka intended for the work to serve as a meditative exploration of how memory shapes personal identity, and it was received by contemporary critics as a significant departure from his more commercially driven manga-based television productions.
