Where it came from
Mendako no Menmen emerged in 2023 as a whimsical short-form original net animation focused on the life of an adorable, sentient dumbo octopus. Produced in the context of Japan’s vibrant niche for surreal, relaxing character-based shorts, the series explores the daily, low-stakes existence of its protagonist, emphasizing a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes charm and gentle humor over complex narrative arcs.
The character design reflects contemporary trends in character marketing, characterized by soft, rounded features and expressive, oversized eyes meant to evoke an immediate sense of empathy from the viewer. Created by artist and animator tsumugi, the series was well-received by audiences on social media platforms for its soothing visual style and its lighthearted commentary on the mundane, effectively establishing a small but dedicated following for the character's merchandise and digital presence.
