Where it came from
Metal Armor Dragonar debuted in 1987 as a Sunrise production during the waning years of the 1980s real robot anime boom. The series was designed to compete with the evolving landscape of mecha animation, shifting toward more realistic military-adjacent aesthetics while maintaining the high-octane action expected of the era. The series was directed by Takeyuki Kanda, who sought to blend character-driven drama with the technical spectacle of the titular Metal Armors.
The mechanical designs were spearheaded by Kunio Okawara and Ichiro Itano, whose work on the series is particularly noted for the transition from the show's initial tone to a more gritty, combat-focused narrative. While the series faced challenges in standing out against the immense popularity of contemporaries like Mobile Suit Gundam, it gained a devoted following among genre enthusiasts for its inventive fight choreography and the distinct evolution of its robotic designs throughout the broadcast.
