Michitekuru Toki no Mukou ni

Michitekuru Toki no Mukou ni, or Beyond the Time of Waning, was produced by Studio Pierrot and released in 1991 as an original video animation. It emerged during a period of transition for the studio, following their work on several high-profile television series and feature films throughout the 1980s. The project served as a standalone special, allowing the animation team to experiment with more atmospheric, narrative-driven storytelling that departed from their usual long-form action series.

The visual design reflects the distinct aesthetic sensibilities of early 1990s Japanese animation, characterized by hand-painted cel work and a focus on melancholic, character-centered direction. While it remains a deep-cut title within the Studio Pierrot catalog, it is noted by enthusiasts for its unique mood and the creative freedom afforded to the production staff at the time. It is regarded today as a modest but evocative example of the studio's foray into experimental OVA projects during the bubble era.
