Millennium Actress was released in 2002 as the second directorial feature from Satoshi Kon, produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse. Conceived as a tribute to the golden age of Japanese cinema, the film follows an interviewer as he unravels the life story of an aging, reclusive film star named Chiyoko Fujiwara. Kon intended the narrative to blur the boundaries between the actress's cinematic roles and her real-life personal journey, creating a meta-textual exploration of memory and obsession.

The film's distinct visual style was crafted under Kon's direction alongside character designer and animation director Takeshi Honda. They employed a fluid editing technique that transitioned seamlessly between different historical eras and film genres, mirroring the way Chiyoko’s life and work merged over time. Upon its release, it received significant critical acclaim for its sophisticated structure and emotional depth, eventually winning the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival and solidifying Kon’s reputation as a visionary in animation.
