Where it came from
Million Doll originated as an idol-themed web manga series written and illustrated by Ai, which was serialized on the Ganma! website starting in 2013. The story explores the intersection of underground idol culture and the rising influence of internet fandoms, specifically focusing on how digital engagement and social media can propel an obscure local act toward mainstream success. The narrative centers on a shut-in otaku named Suuko who uses her online influence to boost the popularity of a struggling idol group.
The 2015 television anime adaptation, produced by Asahi Production and directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi, sought to capture the frenetic pace and visual language of internet-based idol fandom. By utilizing a mix of traditional animation and digital aesthetic choices, the studio aimed to reflect the protagonist's perspective as a virtual architect of fame. While it provided an early look at the mechanics of modern idol promotion, the series is noted more for its topical relevance to the digital era than for widespread critical acclaim upon its initial broadcast.
