Where it came from
Mister Ajikko, produced by the acclaimed studio Sunrise, premiered in 1987 as one of the earliest examples of the culinary anime subgenre. Adapted from the long-running manga series by Daisuke Terasawa, the show centers on the young, prodigy chef Yoichi Ajiyoshi as he competes in rigorous cooking battles to perfect his craft. Its emergence during the late 1980s reflected a growing cultural fascination with food-centric entertainment in Japan, moving away from traditional action tropes to focus on the technical and sensory aspects of cooking.
The series is noted for its distinctive, high-energy visual style, which employed dramatic animation techniques to depict the reactions of characters tasting exceptional dishes. This approach, often referred to as 'Ajikko-style,' helped establish a blueprint for future competitive food anime. While the show was designed to appeal to younger audiences through its whimsical tone and episodic challenges, it remains well-regarded by fans and critics for its influence on the sports-like structure of modern culinary narratives.
