Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island

Cucuruz Doan's Island was released in 2022 as a feature-length reimagining of the fifteenth episode of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who served as the character designer and animation director for the original series, the film was produced by Sunrise to flesh out the narrative of the original episode, which had been famously omitted from international broadcasts due to inconsistencies in animation quality. The project sought to apply modern production standards to the classic Universal Century timeline, offering a more grounded, character-driven perspective on the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

The film's visual style pays homage to Yasuhiko's classic character designs while integrating 3D computer-generated imagery for the mobile suit combat sequences. By expanding the short, standalone premise of the original episode into a full cinematic experience, the creative team aimed to explore the human cost of war through the eyes of Amuro Ray and the desert-dwelling deserter Cucuruz Doan. The film was generally well-received by the Gundam fanbase as a respectful, nostalgic expansion that provided deeper emotional context to a previously marginalized piece of franchise history.
