Where it came from
Released in 2006, this film serves as the third and final installment of the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation compilation trilogy. It was produced by Sunrise to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the original 1985 television series. The project was intended to refine and modernize the narrative of the original show by integrating new animation sequences with remastered original footage, resulting in a significantly altered ending compared to the broadcast version.
The trilogy was written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the Gundam franchise. Tomino sought to re-examine the themes of the original Zeta Gundam with the benefit of two decades of hindsight, aiming for a more cohesive and reflective conclusion. While the project was met with significant nostalgia by long-time fans, it also sparked debate among the community regarding the tonal differences between the new animation and the vintage source material.
