Momotaro, Sacred Sailors

Momotaro: Sacred Sailors, or Momotaro: Umi no Shinpei, was produced by Shochiku under the direction of Mitsuyo Seo as the first feature-length anime film in Japanese history. Commissioned by the Japanese Ministry of the Navy during the final stages of the Second World War, the film was intended as a piece of state-sponsored propaganda, designed to bolster morale and indoctrinate youth through the reimagining of the traditional Japanese folklore hero, Momotaro, as a commander leading an army of anthropomorphic animals.

Despite its origins as a tool for wartime messaging, the film is technically significant for its sophisticated use of cel animation and innovative character design, which drew inspiration from the sensibilities of Disney’s early features. While the narrative is inseparable from the imperialist agenda of its time, contemporary film historians and scholars of animation frequently examine it as a complex artifact that demonstrates the rapid technical advancement of the Japanese animation industry under extreme social and political pressure.
