Where it came from
Mu Shen Ji, also known as Tales of Herding Gods, is an ONA produced by the Chinese platform Bilibili. It is based on the popular web novel of the same name by Zhai Zhu, a work categorized within the xianxia and fantasy genres. The series was developed as part of Bilibili's initiative to adapt highly successful online literature into high-quality 3D animation, aiming to capture the expansive world-building and intricate cultivation systems characteristic of the original text.
The animation design emphasizes a distinct 3D aesthetic intended to modernize the traditional Chinese martial arts fantasy style. The production seeks to balance the technical demands of complex magical battles with the character-driven narrative of the protagonist, Qin Mu. Upon its release, the series was received by the domestic audience as a significant entry in the expanding landscape of Chinese streaming animation, drawing praise for its fidelity to the complex source material and its ambitious visual scope.
