Mukashi Mukashi Momotarou

Released by Gakken in the late 1970s, Mukashi Mukashi Momotarou is a notable example of the studio's educational film and animation division. Produced as part of a series intended to introduce traditional Japanese folklore to young children, the work sought to preserve cultural narratives through accessible, gentle storytelling. These productions were a staple in domestic Japanese classrooms and libraries during the era, emphasizing moral lessons and linguistic preservation.

The visual design of the film reflects the distinct illustrative style common to Gakken's children's media of the period, favoring soft, hand-drawn aesthetics that contrast with the more kinetic styles of mainstream commercial anime. By centering on the classic tale of the boy born from a peach, the animators focused on clear, expressive character movements designed to hold the attention of a young audience. The project was received as a reliable pedagogical tool, appreciated for its fidelity to the original folk story and its calm, unobtrusive artistic approach.
