Where it came from
The Mushibugyo OVA was released in 2014 as a direct-to-video follow-up to the television anime series produced by Seven Arcs Pictures. The series itself is based on the manga by Hiroshi Fukuda, which reimagines the Edo period in an alternate history where giant, human-devouring insects threaten the peace of the shogunate. The OVA was produced to offer fans a continuation of the high-stakes action and character dynamics established in the series, maintaining the studio's energetic animation style.
The character designs and visual direction for the franchise were crafted to balance historical aesthetics with stylized, exaggerated action sequences suitable for the supernatural genre. Seven Arcs Pictures aimed to preserve the intense tone of the manga, focusing on the dynamic ensemble of the Mushibugyo, or Magistrate of Insects. Upon release, the production was received primarily by the existing fan base as a welcome expansion of the series' lore, effectively bridging the narrative between the main broadcast arcs.
