Where it came from
Released in 1999 by the studio Five Ways, My Life As is an original video animation that emerged during a period of prolific independent experimental animation in Japan. The project reflects the late-nineties aesthetic of atmospheric, character-driven storytelling, utilizing a minimalist visual language to explore themes of personal identity and daily introspection. It was crafted as a standalone narrative piece rather than a traditional commercial serial, positioning it as an auteur-driven work intended for a niche audience interested in unconventional animation techniques.
The creative direction behind the piece emphasizes a subdued, intimate tone, likely intended to distance itself from the high-octane action sequences that dominated the era. While production details remain somewhat elusive, the design choices prioritize fluid, understated movement and a restrained color palette, which were hallmarks of studios attempting to elevate OVA content to a more artistic, cinematic status. It was met with modest interest upon its release, primarily within enthusiast circles who appreciated its quiet, contemplative approach to the medium.
