My-Otome

My-Otome was produced by Sunrise and first aired in 2005 as a spiritual successor to the earlier Mai-HiME series. While it shares a creative team and many character designs with its predecessor, it reimagines the cast within an entirely new fantasy setting centered on a monarchy and the elite school for Otome, who serve as protectors to the kingdom's royalty. The series was designed to blend traditional shōjo-influenced aesthetics with the action-heavy, high-stakes narrative style that Sunrise had successfully pioneered in other genre-bending titles of the decade.

The character designs, overseen by Hirokazu Hisa and other key animation staff, were crafted to emphasize a blend of elegance and mechanical complexity, featuring ornate uniforms that function as battle armor. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic departure from the more grounded, school-centric drama of Mai-HiME, leaning heavily into the political intrigue and world-building of its steampunk-inspired setting.
