Provenance

Where it came from

My Son Goku, released in 2003, is a biographical film centered on the life of Shigeo Nagashima, the legendary Japanese baseball player often referred to as Mr. Giants. Directed by Shunsuke Shinomiya, the film functions as a tribute to Nagashima's profound cultural impact on post-war Japan, tracing his path from his early years to his rise as an icon of the Yomiuri Giants. It was produced during a period when Japanese cinema frequently looked toward domestic icons to anchor period dramas, emphasizing the nostalgia associated with the golden age of professional baseball.

The production sought to capture the atmosphere of the Showa era, focusing on the discipline and public fervor surrounding the sport during that time. While the film was received primarily as a sentimental project for dedicated fans of the sport and the subject himself, it remains a notable entry in the catalog of biographical sports dramas produced in Japan at the turn of the millennium. Its visual language relies on classic cinematic techniques common to the biographical genre of that era, prioritizing a respectful and linear narrative of Nagashima's personal and professional trials.
