My Sweet Tyrant, known in Japan as Akkun to Kanojo, began as a web manga series by Waka Kakitsubata, serialized in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Gene. The series centers on the comedic and often awkward relationship between a tsundere high school boy, Atsuhiro 'Akkun' Kagari, and his patient girlfriend, Non Taniguchi. Its transition to an animated television series in 2018 was handled by Yumeta Company, which opted for a short-form format—episodes lasting approximately five minutes each—to suit the punchy, four-panel comic strip roots of the source material.

The adaptation was directed by Shin Katagai, who focused on capturing the frenetic energy of Atsuhiro’s dual personality, characterized by his verbal abuse of his girlfriend when she is present and his obsessive devotion when he believes he is unobserved. The art direction emphasizes a lighthearted, pastel-toned aesthetic that underscores the series' focus on school-life comedy. Upon its release, it was received as a niche but charming entry in the romantic comedy genre, appreciated primarily for its commitment to the extreme archetypes of its leads rather than for deep narrative complexity.
