Where it came from
Released in 1991, The Secret of Blue Water: The Motion Picture serves as a standalone cinematic expansion of the popular television series produced by Studio Gainax and Group TAC. Coming off the momentum of the series' successful television run, the film was conceived to capitalize on the audience's interest in the Jules Verne-inspired world of Nadia and Jean. While it utilizes the established character set, the production team faced the challenge of condensing the epic scope of the series into a feature-length narrative, leading to a focus on new encounters rather than a direct continuation of the main television plot.
The production was helmed by the creative team at Gainax, which at the time was establishing its reputation for high-concept animation. The design aesthetics remained consistent with the series' blend of Victorian-era technology and steampunk elements, overseen by key contributors who prioritized a distinct, polished look to distinguish the film from the television broadcast. While the project was met with interest from the dedicated fanbase, critical reception was mixed, as viewers often compared the more contained scope of the film against the sprawling, multi-arc narrative of the original show.
