Where it came from
Naisho no Tsubomi, or Secret Bud, originated as a manga series by Yauco Kurahashi before being adapted into a three-part original video animation series released in 2008 by Studio ARMS. The project was conceived as a mature exploration of early adolescence, focusing on the social and biological shifts experienced by its young protagonists, Tsubomi and her friends, as they navigate the transition into middle school.
The production sought to balance its educational intentions with the aesthetic conventions of the late 2000s josei and shojo-influenced media. While the series garnered attention for its earnest attempt to demystify complex developmental topics for its target demographic, it remained a niche release within the studio’s broader portfolio, which typically favored more high-action or genre-focused animation styles.
