Where it came from
Namuamidabutsu! -UTENA- was produced by Asahi Production and released as a television anime series in 2019. It serves as an adaptation of a multimedia franchise originally developed by DMM Games, which reimagines various figures from Buddhist mythology as contemporary, stylish avatars. The series was created to capitalize on the success of anthropomorphic character-based media, blending traditional religious iconography with the aesthetic sensibilities of modern character-collection RPGs.
The character designs for the series were crafted to contrast the solemnity of their source material with vibrant, youthful character tropes intended to appeal to a broad fan base. The direction focused on balancing action sequences with the interpersonal dynamics of the deities, or 'Shakado,' as they strive to protect humanity from the manifestation of human passions known as Mara. Upon its release, the series was noted primarily by fans of the franchise for its visual flair and its unique interpretation of historical and spiritual figures.
