Where it came from
Naniwa Yuukyouden: Kyouretsu! Ana ga Attara Iretai-hen was produced by Toei Animation and released as an original video animation (OVA) in 1993. The project emerged during a period when the studio was exploring adaptations of seinen manga that focused on yakuza themes, blending intense crime drama with stylized, often eccentric visual sensibilities characteristic of early nineties Japanese animation.
The production sought to translate the gritty, satirical tone of its source material to the screen, relying on a character design aesthetic that prioritized distinct, exaggerated features to emphasize the protagonist's personality. While it remains a niche entry in Toei's extensive catalog, it serves as a representative example of the studio's willingness to experiment with edgy, mature-oriented storytelling outside of their primary broadcast television output.
