Where it came from
Nattou da! is a children's television program produced by NHK, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, originally airing in the late 1980s. The show was conceived as a fun, educational vehicle centered around the theme of natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soybean dish, using the character of a personified natto bean to engage young audiences with dietary habits and cultural staples.
The character design and visual style of the series reflect the whimsical, high-energy aesthetic common to NHK children's programming of that era. By utilizing a mascot to bridge the gap between nutritional education and entertainment, the creators sought to make a polarizing food item more approachable for children. While it remains a niche artifact of Japanese broadcast history, it is remembered as a quirk of the era's educational variety shows.
