Neo Ranga was produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Yasuhiro Yamaguchi, premiering in Japan in 1998. The series was designed as a modern, urban-fantasy reimagining of the giant monster genre, moving away from traditional apocalyptic tropes to focus on the socio-political and cultural ramifications of a deity appearing in a contemporary metropolis. It stands out for its blend of grounded, slice-of-life storytelling with high-concept mythological elements, reflecting the creative experimentalism present in late 1990s Japanese animation.

When ADV Films brought the series to the North American market, it was positioned as a niche, artistic title within their growing catalog of international animation. The visual direction, characterized by its sharp character designs and distinctively stylized giant entity, sought to bridge the gap between classic tokusatsu sensibilities and character-driven drama.
