Ningyougeki

Ningyougeki, or Puppet Theater, was a foundational television program produced by NHK in 1956 during the early years of Japanese broadcasting. Designed as a cultural bridge between traditional Japanese puppetry arts, such as Bunraku, and the burgeoning medium of television, the series aimed to bring high-art theatrical performances into the domestic living rooms of the post-war Japanese public. It served as a critical experimental space for NHK to refine the techniques of framing and lighting intricate puppets for a television audience.

The production utilized master puppeteers who adapted their craft for the constraints of a studio camera.
