Released in 2009 by Studio Madhouse, the No Longer Human film is part of the Aoi Bungaku series, an anime anthology that adapted seminal works of modern Japanese literature. This particular segment translates Osamu Dazai’s semi-autobiographical 1948 masterpiece, a novel exploring the profound alienation and identity crisis of the protagonist, Yozo Oba, as he struggles to conform to societal expectations. The adaptation was directed by Morio Asaka, who sought to capture the oppressive, introspective atmosphere of Dazai's prose through a somber and visually stark aesthetic.

The character designs for this production were famously provided by Takeshi Obata, known for his work on Death Note and Hikaru no Go. Obata’s approach was to move away from traditional anime stylization to emphasize the psychological weight of the narrative, using sharp, angular features and a muted color palette to reflect the protagonist's internal decay.
