Where it came from
No. 7 Cherry Lane is a 2019 animated feature film directed by Hong Kong auteur Yonfan. Produced by Far Sun Film, the project represents a significant departure from traditional animation, utilizing a labor-intensive rotoscoping technique to bring its dreamlike narrative to life. The film was conceived as a love letter to the Hong Kong of the late 1960s, specifically set against the backdrop of the 1967 leftist riots, blending personal nostalgia with a complex, surrealist romance.
Yonfan, a filmmaker known for his refined aesthetic and focus on art-house sensibilities, spent seven years developing the film's distinct visual style. The character designs and background art evoke the illustrations of the period, aiming to capture the fleeting, melancholic atmosphere of a bygone era. Upon its release, the film was met with critical acclaim for its artistic ambition, ultimately earning the Best Screenplay award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
