Where it came from
Released in 2021, the psychological thriller Noise—directed by Steffen Geypens—emerged from the Flemish film landscape as a study of generational trauma and domestic instability. Produced as part of a push for high-concept genre storytelling within the Belgian film industry, the film explores the unsettling uncovering of family secrets hidden within the walls of a ancestral home, aiming to blend atmospheric dread with a grounded, character-driven narrative.
The film's visual design relies heavily on claustrophobic cinematography and a stark, muted color palette, intended to reflect the protagonist's crumbling psychological state. Upon its international release, it was noted for its deliberate pacing and its contribution to the growing body of European genre cinema that prioritizes mood and subtext over traditional horror tropes, finding a niche audience among enthusiasts of slow-burn psychological thrillers.
