OBSOLETE

Obsolete, a 2019 original net animation, was produced by Buemon and stands as a notable collaboration between Gen Urobuchi, who served as the original creator and writer, and director Hiroki Yamada. The series was developed as a hard science-fiction project, exploring a near-future earth where extraterrestrial technology allows for the construction of highly customizable, cost-effective mecha known as Exo-frames. The production was characterized by its commitment to a gritty, grounded aesthetic that emphasizes logistical and geopolitical consequences over traditional heroic tropes.

The design philosophy behind the Exo-frames focuses on utilitarian modularity, reflecting a shift from the towering, god-like robots common in the mecha genre to smaller, more practical machines that integrate into existing military and industrial infrastructures. Upon its release, the series garnered critical attention for its compact, intelligent storytelling and its ability to condense complex geopolitical themes into brief episodes. Its reception has been largely favorable among fans of unconventional mecha, praised specifically for the technical depth of its world-building and the distinctive, weighted movement of its CG-animated action sequences.
