Where it came from
Omoi no Kakera was released in 2016 as a specialized short film produced by Studio Gaina. It was commissioned by the Fukushima Prefecture as part of a collaborative effort to promote the region's recovery and cultural identity following the 2011 disaster. The project aimed to highlight the natural beauty and local traditions of Fukushima, using animation as a medium to foster emotional resonance and regional pride.
The narrative follows a young girl named Hiiro, focusing on her connection to local festivals and her grandmother's teachings. The design and artistic direction prioritize a soft, evocative aesthetic intended to evoke nostalgia and gentle hope. The film was well-received for its quiet, artistic approach to storytelling, serving as a heartfelt cultural ambassador that eschews traditional commercial tropes in favor of a personal, character-driven tribute to the prefecture.
