Where it came from
Onaka no Ooki na Ouji-sama, which translates to The Prince with the Big Belly, is a short animation produced by NHK. It reflects the broadcaster's long-standing tradition of creating educational and moralistic content for children, often featured within their signature programming blocks that emphasize empathy and personal growth through simple, fable-like storytelling.
The production utilizes a whimsical, hand-drawn aesthetic typical of NHK's mid-to-late 20th-century children's programming. The design centers on clear, expressive character archetypes intended to resonate with a young audience, prioritizing visual accessibility and a gentle, steady narrative pace that was well-regarded for its suitability in early childhood education during its original run.
