Synopsis

Hatanaka Kosaku, a hopeful boxer, has a mean KO punch. Unfortunately, his dietary willpower is weak, and he regularly eats greasy hamburgers right before a bout. As a result, he has to compete in higher weight classes and as soon as he takes an abdominal punch, he vomits, which causes him to lose the match in shame. As he tries to grapple with his weak will, he meets Sister Angela, a novitiate at a local convent. While Sister Angela strives to help Hatanaka in his endeavor, he seems to make her training to be a nun more difficult.

Provenance

Where it came from

One Pound Gospel originated as a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday beginning in 1987. The 1988 OVA adaptation was produced by Studio Gallop, capturing Takahashi’s signature blend of romantic comedy and sports drama. The story follows the unlikely dynamic between a struggling professional boxer and a novice nun, exploring themes of discipline, faith, and human fallibility through the lens of late 1980s Japanese animation aesthetics.

The character designs for the OVA maintain the expressive, rounded style characteristic of the era's animation, faithfully translating Takahashi’s source material for the screen. While the OVA served as a concise entry point for the manga's themes, it was part of a larger wave of 1980s home video market experiments. Critical reception at the time focused on the charm of the central pair and the kinetic energy of the boxing sequences, cementing the title's place within the broader pantheon of Takahashi's prolific catalog.
