Where it came from
Ongaku Shoujo originated as an independent animated short film produced by Studio DEEN for the 2015 Anime Mirai project, an initiative funded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs to support and train young animators. Directed by Kenichi Ishikura, the film was designed to highlight the burgeoning industry of idol culture while emphasizing the creative spirit of newcomers within the studio system.
The story follows a chance encounter between an isolated girl and an underground idol group, using the format to explore themes of passion and artistic collaboration. Upon its release, the short was received as a charming and technically proficient entry within the Anime Mirai lineup, eventually serving as the foundational concept for a larger multimedia franchise that launched a television series in 2018.
