Where it came from
Orphen: Revenge, released in 1999 by J.C. Staff, serves as the second television adaptation of Yoshinobu Akita's light novel series. Following the success of the first anime series, Revenge was produced to expand upon the fantasy world of Sorcerer's Orphen, though it notably deviates from the source material by adopting an episodic, more lighthearted structure compared to the serialized narrative of its predecessor.
The production sought to offer a fresh aesthetic and tonal shift, resulting in character designs and animation styles that distinguish it from the original 1998 series. While it maintained the core premise of the titular sorcerer's adventures, the series was received by fans as a distinct departure, often discussed today for its tonal experimentation within the late-nineties fantasy anime boom.
