Where it came from
Oseam, released in 2003, is a poignant South Korean animated feature directed by Baek Jong-song. Produced by Milestone Entertainment, the film is based on the 1990 children's novel of the same name by Park Gi-hyeon. It tells the story of two young, orphaned siblings—the blind Gilsun and his younger sister Gami—who seek refuge at a mountain temple, weaving themes of innocence, loss, and spiritual transcendence into a narrative set against the backdrop of traditional Buddhist motifs.
The film was celebrated for its delicate hand-drawn aesthetic, which prioritized expressive, fluid character designs and lush, atmospheric backgrounds over the digital trends of the era. Upon its release, it earned critical acclaim for its emotional depth, ultimately winning the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2004 Asia Pacific Film Festival. It remains a significant work in the history of Korean animation, noted for its ability to address mature, existential themes through the lens of a fable.
