Otona no Ikkyuu-san

Otona no Ikkyuu-san, or Adult Ikkyuu-san, was produced by NHK in 2016 as a unique stylistic departure from the classic historical anime franchise Ikkyuu-san. While the original series was a beloved children’s program centered on the childhood antics of the Zen monk Ikkyuu Soujun, this iteration was designed for an adult audience, utilizing a surrealist and satirical aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the traditional animation style of its predecessor.

The series was directed and illustrated with a highly stylized, experimental visual approach that prioritized abstract character designs and dark humor over the wholesome moral lessons of the original. By recontextualizing the legendary figure of Ikkyuu within a contemporary, biting social commentary, NHK aimed to engage viewers who grew up with the 1970s series while offering a sophisticated, avant-garde take on historical Japanese folklore.
