Ox Tales

Ox Tales, known in Japan as Geragera Boes Monogatari, was produced by Telecable Benelux and TV Tokyo, premiering in 1987. The series was an international co-production intended to bridge Japanese animation techniques with European storytelling sensibilities, drawing inspiration from the long-running Dutch comic strip Olle Kapoen, created by Jean Dulieu. The narrative focuses on the adventures of an ox named Ollie and his diverse animal companions in a rural setting, emphasizing gentle, character-driven humor suitable for a younger audience.

The character design maintains the distinct visual language of Dulieu’s original illustrations, which sought to convey a sense of rustic charm and simplicity. By utilizing a soft, watercolor-influenced aesthetic common in late 1980s television animation, the production team successfully translated static comic panels into a fluid, episodic format. Upon its release, the series found a wide reach across Europe and parts of Asia, frequently remembered today for its nostalgic tone and collaborative international origins.
