Where it came from
The pair* is a modular shelving system designed by the French industrial designer Mathieu Matégot in the 1950s. Emerging during a period of post-war reconstruction in Europe, Matégot was renowned for his innovative use of Rigitulle, a perforated metal sheet that allowed for lightweight, airy, and durable furniture designs. The item reflects the mid-century modern preference for functionalist minimalism combined with the playful, sculptural aesthetics that defined Matégot's career.
The design was intended to be highly versatile, allowing users to arrange the shelving components in various configurations to suit contemporary living spaces. Upon its release, it was lauded for its departure from traditional solid wood joinery, positioning Matégot as a visionary in metal fabrication. Today, these pieces are highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century design for their unique texture and their representation of the era's industrial experimentation.
