Where it came from
Papa to Kiss in the Dark is a two-episode original video animation released in 2005 by Studio TNK, adapted from the boys' love manga series by Kazuma Kodaka. The production emerged during a period of rising interest in anime adaptations of adult-oriented manga, aiming to translate Kodaka's distinct character designs and the series' domestic drama into an animated format. It focuses on the complex interpersonal dynamics between a writer and his young son, navigating themes that were characteristic of the mature romance subgenre at the time.
The adaptation was directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima, who worked to balance the series' dramatic core with the aesthetic requirements of the source material. While the production reflects the limited animation techniques typical of independent OVA projects from the mid-2000s, it remains a notable example of early queer-themed anime aimed at a specific niche demographic. Upon its release, the title gained a dedicated following among fans of Kodaka's work, who appreciated the direct adherence to the manga's visual style and narrative beats.
