Where it came from
Poo-Neko Shougekijou, or Poo-Cat Shock Theater, debuted in 2011 as a series of short-form anime segments. Produced by the studio DLE Inc., the show was created to capitalize on the rising popularity of flash-style, quirky internet animation in Japan. The series centered on the bizarre daily lives of cats living in a surreal environment, utilizing a minimalist aesthetic that prioritized dry, absurdist humor over traditional animation fluidness.
The character designs and directing were heavily influenced by the 'Flash anime' movement, which favored rapid production and satirical storytelling. By employing a stark, low-budget look, the creators aimed to create a viral sensation that resonated with the burgeoning social media landscape of the early 2010s. While it remains a niche title, it is recognized by aficionados of experimental comedy for its unconventional narrative structure and deadpan delivery.
