Princess Jellyfish

Princess Jellyfish, known in Japan as Kuragehime, was adapted into an eleven-episode anime series in 2010 by studio Brain's Base, with North American home video distribution rights held by Funimation. The series is based on the popular josei manga by Akiko Higashimura, which explores themes of social anxiety, obsession, and the unconventional bonds formed within the Amamizukan apartment complex. It emerged during a period when josei anime—aimed at adult women—was becoming a more visible, albeit niche, presence in the global market.

The character design and visual direction for the anime were spearheaded by Kenji Hayama, who sought to translate Higashimura's distinct, expressive art style into a fluid animation format. The narrative, centered on a group of self-proclaimed 'otaku' women and the sudden intrusion of a stylish cross-dressing man, was lauded by critics for its balance of comedic whimsy and genuine social commentary regarding gender identity and self-acceptance. Upon its release, it became a cult favorite for its unique aesthetic and refusal to adhere to traditional romantic tropes.
