Where it came from
Princess Resurrection Special was produced by Madhouse in 2008 as a direct-to-video accompaniment to the 2007 television anime adaptation of Mitsunaga Yasunori's dark fantasy manga. The original series, which aired for twenty-six episodes, garnered a dedicated cult following for its unique blend of gothic horror aesthetic and deadpan comedic tone, leading the studio to create three additional episodes to further explore the supernatural world of Hime and her android servant, Flandre.
The character designs were overseen by Kazuya Kuroda, who aimed to preserve the stylized, sharp-edged aesthetic of the manga while translating the series' grim Victorian sensibilities into animation. Upon its release, the special was received as a stylistic continuation of the original show's high-contrast visuals, maintaining the signature Madhouse production quality that defined the franchise's brief but memorable presence in the late 2000s anime landscape.
