Puella Magi Sonico Magica

Released in 2011 as a promotional collaboration, Puella Magi Sonico Magica was a crossover project created by Nitroplus to celebrate the burgeoning popularity of their mascot, Super Sonico. The piece was designed to bridge the aesthetic gap between the iconic, dark-magical girl themes popularized by the 2011 series Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the established visual identity of Nitroplus’s central mascot. By casting Sonico in the role of a magical girl, the studio leveraged the widespread cultural visibility of the magical girl subgenre to reinforce Sonico's versatility as a brand character across various media formats.

The visual design of the ONA was helmed by the creative team at Nitroplus, who aimed to preserve Sonico's signature soft, cheerful aesthetic while integrating the stylized, surrealist costume elements associated with the magical girl genre. Upon its release, the project was received primarily as a novelty experiment by the enthusiast community. It served as a playful testament to Nitroplus’s ability to oscillate between their darker, psychological thriller roots and the lighter, character-driven marketing that defined Sonico's growth in the early 2010s.
