Puppet Princess

Puppet Princess, known in Japan as Karakuri no Kimi, was produced as an original video animation and released in 2000. It emerged during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly exploring darker, action-oriented fantasy themes for international markets. The story follows a young puppeteer who seeks vengeance against the warlord responsible for her father's death, utilizing enchanted puppets as her primary weapons.

The animation was directed by Rin Taro, a veteran figure in the industry known for his work on Metropolis and Galaxy Express 999. His direction focused on blending traditional character designs with the evolving aesthetic sensibilities of turn-of-the-millennium anime. Upon its release in the West by Media Blasters, the title was received as a niche entry in the dark fantasy subgenre, noted by critics for its distinct visual style and the thematic juxtaposition of marionette artistry with brutal combat sequences.
