Where it came from
Quanhuang Mingyun, also known as The King of Fighters: Destiny, was released as a 3D animated ONA series beginning in 2017. Developed by iDRAGONS Creative Studio, the project was designed to celebrate the long-standing legacy of SNK’s iconic fighting game franchise by retelling the events of the original 1994 tournament and the subsequent Orochi saga.
The animation reflects a shift toward stylized 3D aesthetics aimed at bridging the gap between classic 2D sprite-based history and modern digital animation standards. While the series received mixed reception for its departure from traditional hand-drawn styles, it was praised for its commitment to accurately representing the complex lore and diverse character rosters that defined the arcade era of the 1990s.
