The quote 'I think, therefore I am' (Cogito, ergo sum) originated in René Descartes' 1637 philosophical treatise, Discourse on the Method. Written in the context of the Scientific Revolution, Descartes sought to establish a foundation for knowledge that could survive radical skepticism. By attempting to doubt everything, he concluded that the act of doubting itself served as proof of a thinking subject, thereby providing an indubitable starting point for his rationalist philosophy.

The design of this intellectual landmark lies in its concise, linguistic structure, intended to bridge the gap between metaphysical inquiry and logical certainty. While originally written in French and later Latin, the phrase became a cornerstone of Western philosophy, heavily influencing Enlightenment thinkers. Its reception has been profound, though it remains a subject of intense debate among scholars who frequently dissect its circular logic and the ontological status of the 'I' that Descartes posits.
