Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul

Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul was produced by Studio MAPPA as a direct sequel to the 2014 series Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, continuing the adaptation of the popular social mobile card game developed by Cygames. The series was designed to shift the tone from the high-fantasy adventure of the first season to a more character-driven drama, set ten years after the initial conflict with the dragon Bahamut. Director Keiichi Sato returned to lead the project, aiming to explore the complex sociopolitical tensions between humans, demons, and gods within the bustling capital city of Anatae.

The animation style favored fluid, kinetic action sequences paired with a distinct character design language that emphasized expressive, angular aesthetics. Upon its 2017 release, the series was noted for its departure from traditional fantasy tropes, centering its narrative on the spirited Nina Drango. While reception was generally positive regarding the technical animation quality and the bold stylistic choices, it remains a notable example of Cygames and MAPPA’s early efforts to translate a mobile gaming property into a standalone cinematic television experience.
