The second film in a duology compiling the Mawaru Penguindrum anime with new elements.
In order to save the life of their younger sister Himari, twin brothers Kanba and Shoma Takakura search for the Penguindrum under the command of a mysterious penguin hat. Meanwhile, believing in her own destiny, high school girl Ringo Oginome continues to make the events written in her diary come true. All the while, Masako Natsume continues trying to get her hands on Ringo’s diary in order to find guidance to a new destiny. Ten years have passed since they began searching for the Penguindrum, and now Kanba and Shoma, who once boarded a train that changed their destiny, have returned for a moment from that destined place.

Where it came from
RE:cycle of the PENGUINDRUM Part 2: I Love You serves as the second installment of a two-part cinematic reimagining of the cult classic 2011 anime series Mawaru Penguindrum. Produced by Studio Lapin Track and directed by original creator Kunihiko Ikuhara, the film was released in 2022 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the franchise. The project was designed to both condense the complex, surrealist narrative of the original television run and introduce new plot elements, providing a definitive version of the story for both returning fans and new viewers.
The film maintains the distinct aesthetic identity of the original series, blending Ikuhara’s signature allegorical visual language with updated animation techniques. In this second installment, the focus shifts toward the emotional climax and the thematic exploration of love, sacrifice, and the 'destiny' that binds the Takakura siblings. Upon its theatrical release in Japan, the film was noted for its ambitious structural editing and its commitment to preserving the original series' challenging, avant-garde tone while polishing the visual presentation for a modern audience.
